Divorce Records in Virginia
The state government in which the individuals reside regulates their divorces. Therefore, the divorce records are kept within the state. Generally, the divorce records are held at the local County Virginia, Divorce Records courthouse where the divorce was filed. If the courthouse has one, the Prothonotary Office is the correct office to contact. Some states also maintain divorce records at a state repository.
To receive a certified copy of a divorce record, the local County Virginia, Divorce Records courthouse must be contacted. The state repository does not issue certified copies. Each County Virginia, Divorce Records holds the divorce records for the divorces filed in their County Virginia, Divorce Records. If the individual was divorced several times and in different counties, then you will need to conduct separate searches at each of the counties involved.
If the County Virginia, Divorce Records where the divorce occurred is not known, then a statewide search must take place. This would involve either a search by individual counties or a search at the state repository, if one exists. You will be required to submit a written request each time, so keeping a copy of your original request is an excellent idea.
A written request is required to begin a search for a divorce record. Specific information is requested, including your relationship to the individual whose records you are requesting. Additionally, a small fee, typically between five and fifteen dollars is required at this time.
If you can provide the majority of the requested information, then the search should take between two to ten days. Other factors may increase the amount of time needed to conduct the search including the size of the courthouse and the availability of its staff.
Genealogical searches, or those that are digging into the past, usually take longer to locate. In many cases, sparse information is available and the County Virginia, Divorce Records is not known. It may be possible to conduct a search for past and/or current spouses on the individual in question. Typically, this type of search results in the addresses of the spouses that are listed. Even if it does not include the County Virginia, Divorce Records, the address will lead to the name of the County Virginia, Divorce Records. Then, at least, you will have a starting point for your actual search for the divorce records.
For an efficient and successful search for the divorce records that you are trying to locate, follow these steps:
1. Print or type each name and address clearly to avoid confusion. This includes the full name of both the husband and the wife. The maiden name should be included for the wife.
2. Keep your request brief and to the point.
3. Limit your request to one document.
4. Include the full names of the individuals, including nicknames and alternate spellings that may have been used.
5. Include the full address of the individual at the time of the divorce, including street, city or town, and state. If you know the County Virginia, Divorce Records in which the divorce took place, include that as well.
6. Include the date that the divorce was finalized. If you do not have this piece of information available, include a time frame for the search. Generally, it is best to specify a short span of years for an unknown year search. You can always expand the number of years that you search, and a shorter span will lead to a shorter search. You can expect to pay an additional fee for searches such as this that require more effort.
7. Include contact information where you can be reached in the event that more information is required. Include a daytime, as well as, an evening, telephone number. You may also include a fax number or an e-mail address.
8. You should include your relationship to the individual�s listed in your search request.
9. You should include the purpose of your request.
10. Print your name clearly and sign your request. Some states may also require additional identifying information on you as well, including a driver�s license number.
11. Include a SASE, or self addressed stamped envelope with your request for a speedier delivery.
12. Include the date that you mail your request with your correspondence.
