How to Find Business Records in Vermont State
Vermont State Business Records
The Vermont Secretary of States website allows anyone to search Vermont
business records in one of three ways -- searching by business name, by
an individuals name, or by the availability of a business name. Below
you will find a short tutorial on how to search using each of these
methods.
Searching the Corporate Database by Business Name
1. Go to the Vermont Secretary of States website at
http://www.sec.state.vt.us/soshome.htm .
2. On the left side menu, select the Corporations option (second one
down).
3. On the left hand side menu, there will be several inks. Scroll all
the way down until you see the Search Corps Databases link (sixth one
up from the bottom).
4. You will come to a form where you can enter the business name. Enter
in the business name and click Retrieve Information.
5. If your exact name is not found, you will receive a list of all the
businesses in Vermont whose name begins that same letter as the name you
searched for. So, if you type in Wal-Mart, you will receive a list
that includes Walnut Street Securities, Weston Family Limited
Partnership, and Waterpro Supplies Corporation. Your results will be
categorized by corporations, trade names, LLCs, partnerships,
reservations, and registrations.
6. When you find the company you are looking for, click on their name.
This will take you to their information page which may list different
types of information depending on what type of registration it is.
Searching the Corporate Database by an Individuals Name
This will help you locate a business based on the name of a person who
may be involved with that business in some way.
1. Go to the Vermont Secretary of States website at
http://www.sec.state.vt.us/soshome.htm .
2. On the left side menu, select the Corporations option (second one
down).
3. On the left hand side menu, there will be several links. Scroll all
the way down until you see the Individual Person Search link (fifth
one up from the bottom).
4. This will take you to a form where you can type on the persons first
and/or last name (the last name must be specified).
5. You will receive a list of everyone in the database that matches your
search criteria. Highlight the persons name and click Retrieve
Information.
6. The information page for the business that is associated with that
person will automatically display.
Searching the Corporate Database by Name Availability
1. Go to the Vermont Secretary of States website at
http://www.sec.state.vt.us/soshome.htm .
2. On the left side menu, select the Corporations option (second one
down).
3. On the left hand side menu, there will be several inks. Scroll all
the way down until you see the Search Name Availability link (fourth
one up from the bottom).
4. You will be taken to a page that has an overview of the corporation
keyword search process. Read the information and click GO TO THE
KEYWORD SEARCH.
5. You will be taken to a page which will outline the search rules. It
will also include a form where you can type in the business name
(keyword).
6. If the name has already been used, you will instantly be taken to
that companys information page. Otherwise, it will say that the term is
not found and you will know that the name is available. This option will
show only active and terminated records, not inactive ones since those
names would also be available.
Each of these search options will lead to the same company information
page. On this information page, you may be able to find out each
companys name, status, file number, type, incorporation/registration
date, state, fiscal month end, registered agent, address, and a list of
their officers. If you are looking at reservations, it will also include
why the name was reserved and when the reservation ends. Additionally,
there will also be a link to the information contact, at the bottom of
each page, to send any questions or concerns you may have about the
listing.
