searching online. Here are a few tips for accessing this information
over the internet.
What Records Are Maintained by the South Dakota Secretary of State?
The South Dakota Secretary of State maintains documents pertaining to
the formation and status of corporations and similar business entities.
Although you may not view images of these records online, much
information from these records in provided online to be searched.
Additionally, the South Dakota Secretary of State maintains records of
�fictitious business names� that are used by South Dakota businesses.
Fictitious names are trade names that are not the official name of the
business but represent the name under which companies market and do
business with consumers.
How Can I Search for Records Maintained by the South Dakota Secretary of
State?
To search for business records maintained by the South Dakota Secretary
of State, first go to the South Dakota Secretary of State website, found
at
http://www.sdsos.gov/index.shtm . Then scroll over the option marked
�Business Services� to display the Business Services menu.
To search for business records, from the Business Services menu, select
the option �Corporations.� Then click on the option �Click here to
Search Organization Information.� This will take you to a page where you
can search by business number or by business name. Unless you know the
exact filing number of the business for which you wish to search, the
name search provides more flexibility. If you are not certain of the
business name, input as much of the name as you know; the search results
list will include all business names that begin with your search terms.
The search results will be returned in list form, including the
corporation name, the ID number, the date of incorporation, the date of
the last annual report, the organization type and the status. The ID
numbers are clickable links that permit you to view additional
information about the business entity. Such additional information
includes the home state, the identity and address of the registered
agent, and the registered office city.
To search for a registered fictitious business name, from the Business
Services menu, select the option �Fictitious Business Names.� Then from
the right side of the screen, select the option marked �Search.� You
will be given the option to search by �Business Information,� �Owner
Information,� or �Registration Information.� (Business Information
pertains to the business entity, Owner Information pertains to the
individual or company who owns the business entity, and Registration
Information pertains to the registered fictitious name.) If you search
by registration name, remember to adjust the date settings in the search
panel, which are otherwise set to a single day and would return
inaccurate results.
The search results will be returned in list form, providing the details
of the search results. If you searched by business information or owner
information, scrolling to the right side of the screen will reveal an
option for each item marked �View Detail,� which will permit you to view
additional information about each item in the search results list.
Clicking on �View Detail� will show even more information about the
business. If you searched by �Business Information,� you will see
details about the business and you will also be able to click options at
the bottom of the page to view the owner information and registration
information. If you searched by owner information, a button at the
bottom will give you access to business information for that owner,
permitting you to then access registration information. If you searched
by registration information, your search results list will include no
clickable links, but will include the business name and owner name
corresponding to the fictitious registered name, as well as the
identification number and date of registration filings.
