How Can I Search for Records Maintained by the South Carolina Secretary
of State?
In order to begin searching for business and security interest documents
in the State of South Carolina, begin by visiting the South Carolina
Secretary of State website, located at
http://www.scsos.com/ . Then scroll down and select your search
option in blue from the right side of the page. Either select Online
UCC Filings Search to search for security interest information, or
Online Business Filings Search to search for information about South
Carolina businesses.
If you wish to search for business entity information, select Online
Business Filings Search from the South Carolina Secretary of State home
page. This takes you to a page including a blue and white search window
that allows you to input the corporation name for which you wish to
search. You may also select whether the search information you have
included represents the beginning of a corporate name or some other
portion of a corporate name. After inputting your search criteria,
select the button marked Search to view the search results matching
your criteria.
The results will be returned in list form which will include the names
of all corporations that satisfy your search. Clicking on one of these
names will carry you to a page dedicated to information about that
business entity. This page will include the corporations name, the
status, the state of incorporation, the name and address of the
registered agent, the filing date, the effective date and the date of
any dissolution. This page will also indicate whether the corporation is
foreign or domestic (incorporated outside or inside the State of South
Carolina). Additionally, a list is included which names any records that
the Secretary of State has on file pertaining to that business entity.
If you wish to search for security interest information, from the South
Carolina Secretary of State home page, select the option Online UCC
Filings Search on the right side of the page, toward the bottom. This
takes you to a search page including a blue and white search window
where you may enter a name or number to be searched, and select whether
you wish to search for the name of the debtor, the name of the secured
party, or the number of a UCC 1 or UCC 3. UCC 1 and UCC 3 indicate types
of documents filed. If you do not have this information, it is
preferable to search by debtor or secured party name. Searching by last
name is sufficient. Then you may select whether the information you are
searching for begins with your search terms or merely contains your
search terms. Once your search criteria have been entered, select the
button marked Search.
The search results will be returned in list form, including name and
address, or ID number, depending on the search criteria entered.
Clicking on any listed name will carry you to another list showing all
of the security documents filed in South Carolina pertaining to that
name. Selecting the ID number will take you to a new page displaying
more specific information about that particular UCC filing, including
the identities of the debtor and secured party and their addresses, as
well as the filing and expiration dates.
