Searching for Business Records in Hawaii
Searching for Business Records in Hawaii
A wealth of public information is available on businesses registered in
the state of Hawaii.
The Business Registration Division (BREG) of the Department of Commerce
& Consumer Affairs maintains a public register of all organizations
authorized to do business in the state of Hawaii. More than 90,000
active businesses are listed on the register, which includes trademarks,
trade names and service names, as well as corporations, limited
liability companies and all types of partnerships.
The register can be searched online by carrying out a business name
search. A business complaints history database is also searchable
online. Other information, such as copies of original documents filed
with BREG, can be obtained by visiting or contacting BREG.
Online Business Name Search
An online business name search enables you to find out whether a
business is a legitimate, registered business and reveals further
information on the organization, such as the names of its corporate
officers, details of its stocks and shares, and its trademarks and trade
names.
BREGs database contains information on all registered businesses
currently active in the state of Hawaii, as well as businesses that
ceased to operate during the period from 1996 to the present day.
Anyone can access the database through the Internet and carry out
unlimited business name searches free of charge.
Although the online business name search may give you an indication of
whether or not a business name is available for registration, it should
not be taken as the definitive answer. If you are setting up a new
business and wish to find out if a proposed name can be used, you will
need to contact BREG directly by calling (808) 586 2727.
Follow this procedure for an online business name search:
1. Go to: http://hbe.ehawaii.gov/cogs/search.html;jsessionid=78E42567E02DE72D7EF929D7B95593E3
2. Enter either the full or partial name of the business in the box. If
you are searching under a partial name, you must enter at least three
letters. If these are the initial letters, select begins with from the
drop-down box, or, if your partial search consists of one or more words
from the business name, select contains from the drop-down box.
3. Click on search
4. A list of search results will appear on screen.
5. Click on the name of each business to access that organizations full
record. The record contains a wide range of information on the business
under six main headings:
a. General Information: including the type and purpose of the business,
date and place of incorporation and the mailing address.
b. Annual Filings: the status of the companys annual filings for each
of the previous years.
c. Trade Names, Trademarks and Service Marks: A list of active and
expired trade names, trademarks and service marks held by the business,
together with the category of goods or services each one applies to.
d. Stocks: details of stocks and shares.
e. Officers: names and titles of the chief corporate officers and the
dates on which they were appointed.
f. Transactions: dates of important events, such as a name change,
merger or change of registered office.
6. It is possible to purchase a Certificate of Good Standing for the
business from this webpage in either electronic or printed format. This
certificate includes basic information on the business and confirms:
a. the business is registered in the state of Hawaii,
b. its required filings and documentation are in good standing.
Click on the relevant button at the top of the page to make an online
purchase.
Online Business & Licensee Complaints History Search
If you are thinking of doing business with a company and wish to find
out whether or not any complaints against the business have been filed
with the Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) or the Regulated Industries
Complaints Office (RICO), you may search the Business & Licensee
Complaints History database online and free of charge by following these
steps:
1. Go to: http://pahoehoe.ehawaii.gov/cms/app and read the terms of
carrying out a search on this page.
2. If you agree to the terms, click on I agree at the bottom of the
page.
3. Enter the name of the business for which you wish to search the
complaints database.
4. Click on submit query.
5. A list of results will appear. If the database does not contain any
complaints against the business, you will see there were no matches to
your search on screen. If one or more complaints exist, a record of
each complaint will appear. You can then view each individual complaint
history report by clicking on the icons in the complaint history
report column.
