How to Find Business Records in Oklahoma
Searching for Business Records in Oklahoma
In the State of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Secretary of State is responsible
for maintaining business records such as documentation of incorporation
as well as state trademark registry information. Some of this
information is available for no fee. Here are some tips to assist you in
accessing this information over the internet.
What Records Are Maintained by the Oklahoma Secretary of State?
When corporations and similar entities are formed, they are required to
file documentation of their formation with the Secretary of State, as
well as periodic documentation of their status. It should be noted that
the Oklahoma Secretary of State will only have the incorporation
documents of corporations formed in Oklahoma; if a business elected to
incorporate under the laws of a different state, the Oklahoma Secretary
of State would not be the recipient of the incorporation documents.
Additionally, the State of Oklahoma maintains a state registry of
trademarks claimed by Oklahoma businesses. This registry should not be
confused with the federal registry maintained by the United States
Patent and Trademark Office. These records are maintained by the
Oklahoma Secretary of State.
How Can I Search for Records Maintained by the Oklahoma Secretary of
State?
To begin your search for Oklahoma business records online, first go to
the Oklahoma Secretary of State website at
http://www.sos.state.ok.us/ .
Then Select the option at the top of the page marked SOONERAccess.
This will take you to a page displaying the different types of searches
that can be performed and a notation of which searches may be performed
for free and which will only be performed for a fee.
In order to search to determine whether a desired business name is
taken, from the SOONERAccess page select the option Name Availability.
You will be taken to a page where you may select whether to perform a
standard search, a search of churches only, a search of banks only, or a
search of domestic cooperatives only. After making your selection, you
will be taken to a search page where you may enter the desired business
name in the search window, then click Search. Results will be returned
in list form, including filing number, entity name, type, registered
agent and effective date. In order to purchase additional information,
you can select the radio button next to each item or click on the filing
number to enter payment information. It should be remembered that no
name availability search can take the place of a confirmation from the
Secretary of States office that you have successfully registered the
name yourself.
In order to search for general business entity information, from the
SOONERAccess page select the option Entity Search. You will be taken
to a page where you may select Search Active to search for active
corporations, Search Banks, Search Churches, Search Domestic
Cooperatives, Search All, Search for Registered Agent, Search by
Name of Person, and Filing Number Search. After making your selection
you will be taken to a search page where your search terms may be
entered. The search results will include filing number, name, entity
type, and in the case of individual name searches, the title. Each item
in the search result list will have a radio button to allow you to order
additional information. Alternatively, clicking on the filing number
will permit you to access additional information online for a fee.
To search for state-registered trademark information, from the
SOONERAccess page, select the option Name Search or the option
Trademark Search. Selecting Name Search will take you immediately to
a search window to input search terms. Selecting Trademark Search will
take you to a page where you can select to search for all trademarks,
search by registration number, search by document number, or search by
applicant name. After making your selection, you will be taken to a page
where you can enter your search criteria. The search results will be
returned in a list format including registration number, description,
class code, and trademark status. The registration numbers are clickable
links that will allow you to view additional information about the
trademark, including the word description and date of expiration. A link
marked View Specimen permits you to view an example of the trademark.
Three tabs can be clicked, Applicants, Filing History and
Classification, which will permit viewers to access that additional
information.
