How to Find Business Records in Missouri State
How to Search for Missouri State Business Records
When searching for Missouri State business records, your search should
start at the Secretary of States website (http://www.sos.mo.gov). From
the horizontal menu under the header, you will need to choose the
Business option. Once in the business section, choose Corporations
from the left side menu. Once in the corporations section, you will need
to choose the Online Services option from the left side menu. This
will take you to a page with several links. You will want to choose the
first one, labeled Search for Registered Corporation/Business Names.
Under the Search for Registered Corporation/Business Names section,
you will want to choose the Click here to search the Secretary of
State's database of business entities option. This will take you to a
page where you have three search options: To search by business name, to
search by character number, or to search by registered agent.
Searching By Business Name
The first way is to search by business name. Type in all or part of the
businesss name and then select one of the following options: Starting
with, All words, Corporate name availability, Sounds like, or
Exact match. You can also select the Only active corporations option
so that you do not receive any inactive corporations in your search
results listing. This option may be best for those who are wanting to
use this search to determine if a particular corporate name is available
for them to use.
After you hit Search, you will be taken to a page that lists each
companys name, their character numbers, the type of business (general
business, LLC, non-profit, etc), their status (active or inactive), and
each companys entity creation date for every record that matches your
search criteria. When you find the listing you are looking for, select
the companys name or character number to find out more information.
Searching By Character Number
The second option is to search by character number. You will need to
select the By Character Number link on the left side menu to get to
the page (the second link under the Search section). Simply type the
character number into the search box. There are no other options to
narrow your search, since the character number should be exclusive to
the company you are looking for. When you search by character number,
after you hit Search you will immediately be taken to the business
page that matches that character number. This will take you directly to
the companys information page.
Searching By Registered Agent
Finally, the third way to search for Missouri State business records on
the Secretary of States website is to search by registered agent. You
will need to select the By Registered Agent link on the left side menu
to get to the page (the third link under the Search section). On this,
you simply type the agents name into the search box. After you hit
Search, you will get a list of all the registered agents with that
name. Your search could easily pull up a few dozen names if you are
searching a well populated state, have only searched on the last name,
and that last name is fairly common. There may even be agents that have
the same first and last name, but different middle initial, so make sure
you look through the list carefully.
Beside each registered agents name, there will be a number representing
how many businesses he or she is representing. Once you find the
registered agent you are looking for, click on his or her name. This
will take you to a page which lists each companys name, their character
numbers, the type of business (general business, LLC, non-profit, etc),
their status (active or inactive), and each companys entity creation
date. You can click in the company name or entity number to get more
information on that particular organization.
What Information You Will Find
All three of these options will eventually lead you to the same company
information page. On this page you can receive information on the
companys business name history, their business information, and their
registered agent information. Their business name history will list the
name and the name type. Their business information will list their
character number, status, entity creation date, state of business,
expiration date, last annual report filed date, and last annual report
filed. Their registered agent information will list the agents name,
office address, and mailing address. You can also click on the agents
name to see a listing of all the companies they represent and find out
the same information on these companies as well.
No matter if you are doing this search to find out information on a
particular company, to find a registered agent in Missouri for your own
company, or to see if a particular business name is available, the
Missouri Secretary of States website will be the best resource for you.
