Military service records information and military records research specialists
Military Service Records are valuable tools, both for veterans, veterans� next of kin, and for those who are doing genealogical research. Containing information about former servicemen, they can often unlock doors that we never even knew existed. How difficult is it to obtain these records? You�d be surprised just how easy they are, provided you have to proper information to fill in the blanks.
Service records contain information such as duty stations and assignments, a veteran�s training, performance and qualifications while in the service, any awards or medals that the veteran earned, as well as any disciplinary actions taken against him/her, emergency information, insurance, administrative comments or remarks, and information pertaining to the veteran�s separation/discharge from the service. Service records do not contain information such as:
- Pay records
- Records of veterans who are no longer active duty, but who have reserve status.
- Records of veterans who have been discharged, retired, or who died in service, since the year 1995 (Navy), 1999 (Marine Corps), 2003 (Army), or 2005 (Air Force). You should contact the Personnel Center or Headquarters of the appropriate branch of service for more information on how to obtain those records.
- Records of those who are currently serving in the National Guard or records of former National Guard members who were never called into active service.
- The health records of most active duty servicemen.
So if these Military Service Records are what you�re looking for, how do you go about obtaining these records? The first step (and the easiest), is to complete a special form, designed for this purpose. This form is called a Standard Form 180 and can be obtained as follows:
How to Get a Standard Form 180 (SF-180), Request Pertaining to Military Records:
Obtaining a copy of the SF-180 is actually very easy. You have several options, in which to get your own copy. They are as follows:
1. Download a copy of the SF-180 online at http://www.archives.gov/research/order/standard-form-180.pdf
2. Request that a copy of the form be faxed to you from the National Archives and Records Administration. This is done by contacting the Fax-on-Demand system at (301) 837-0990 from a fax machine, using the handset (this must be done from a fax machine). Next, you simply follow the voice prompts and, when asked, request a copy of document # 2255.
3. Order the form through the mail by emailing http://www.archives.gov/contact/
4. Write a letter to request a copy of the form and mail it to:

5. Request a form from Federal Information Centers
6. An SF-180 can also be obtained from local Veterans� Administration offices (a list of addresses is provided at the end of this article for your convenience).
7. A form can also be requested from various veterans� service organizations
This form may be photocopied as often as needed, but a separate SF-180 form should be completed for each individual set of records.
Obtaining Records by Writing:
If you cannot obtain an SF-180 form, you may still write and request military records. The following information will be needed:
- The veteran�s full name that was used while in service
- What branch of service that the veteran belonged to
- Service or social security number
- Dates of service
- Date and place of birth (especially helpful if the service number is not known)
- Place of discharge
- Last unit they were assigned to
- Place of entry into the service, if this is known
In order to help speed the process along and fulfill your request, you should also state:
- The purpose or reason for your request of these records (i.e.: researching personal military history, applying for benefits, etc)
- Any deadlines which might pertain to your request
- Any specific information, records, or documentation which you might need from the Official Military Personnel File, in addition to your Report of Separation (DD Form # 214).
Another way of obtaining your records is by visiting the National Archives and Records Administration�s National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) or the Archival Research Room in St. Louis, Missouri. If this is your plan, be sure that you schedule an appointment well in advance and be sure to visit http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/public/visitors-services.html for further details regarding your visit.
Independent Researchers:
While copies of these records can usually be obtained for free, there may be situations that require more extensive research. For this reason, the use of independent researchers are often employed. Some of these researchers specialize in military records; others specialize in the military records that are held at the National Personnel Records Center. Other researchers specialize in genealogy and uncovering family history records. For your convenience, a list of researchers is provided below:
