How to Find California Death Records
Death Records in California
The State of California�s Office of Vital Records maintains records of
deaths recorded in California. Among the goals of the Office of Vital
Records is to establish a permanent public record for each death, fetal
death, birth, marriage and dissolution that occurs in California and
provide certified copies of these vital events.
Recent identity theft legislation makes it more difficult for just
anyone to obtain a death certificate. In California, effective July 1
2003, there are two types of death records available, a certified copy
and a certified informational copy.
Certified Copies:
Certified copies of death certificates are certified copies of the
original death certificate on file with the Office of Vital Records and
are able to be used to establish identity of the registrant and are only
issued to authorized individuals such as: spouses, dependents, siblings
or an attorney representing the registrant�s estate. Law enforcement
agencies acting on official business are also authorized to obtain a
certified copy of the death certificate as are employees or agents of a
funeral establishment acting within the scope of their employment on
behalf of an individual specified within Section 7100 of the Health and
Safety Code (paragraphs 1-5, inclusive of subdivision A).
Certified copies of a death certificate will be issued to authorized
people after fees have been paid and a sworn, notarized statement has
been included with the application. Funeral establishments acting on
behalf of an individual specified within Section 7100 of the Health and
Safety Code (paragraphs 1-5, inclusive of subdivision A) must include a
sworn statement however the funeral establishment�s statement does not
need to be notarized.
Certified Informational Copies:
A certified informational copy is also a certified copy of the original
death certificate on file with the Office of Vital Records however it
contains a large heading that says, �INFORMATIONAL. NOT A VALID DOCUMENT
TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY� across the face of the document. This document
cannot be used to establish identity. It is available to people who are
ineligible for obtaining a certified copy. This type of document
contains all the same information as a certified copy but it cannot be
used to prove death of an individual.
Requesting a Copy of a Death Certificate:
If you are requesting either type of document within six months of the
death, you are better served to inquire at the county level because of
the time delay in sending the documents to the State of California.

Mail the completed form along a sworn notarized statement (if
applicable) and $12 per record to:

Allow about four weeks for processing your application.
Amendments to death certificates are made to correct mistakes or add
additional information to the death certificate. The amendment process
is slow and tedious and can take about eight months. Please see the
California Government�s website for information on how to go about
making amendments to a death certificate. If you know that a death
certificate is in the process of being amended, you are best to wait
until the process is complete before requesting your copy. If you
request a copy while the death certificate is being amended, you will
either receive an un-amended copy or you will receive a notice of No
Public Record.
